A curly-hair community discussion about losing spiral curls after a Brazilian blowout and whether the curl pattern may return after washing or growing out.
I thought the whole point of getting a blowout was to make your hair "straight" and frizz free?
I had a blow out two years ago and it took half a year to get all of my curls back. I'm sure if you wash your hair a lot and try to wear off the product, while using curling gel, you can get your hair back to normal.
Honestly though, don't ever get treatments without doing a lot of research beforehand.

BBOs have straighter in them, so no your curl will not come back until the damaged hair grows out. Sorry to say your stylist lied to you.

I wasn't completely sure what benefits they claim so I googled it and found a nice FAQ from Brazilian Blowout's website.
Q. Is the Brazilian Blowout going to make my hair straight?
A. If your hair is wavy, the Brazilian Blowout will make your hair appear naturally straight and healthy. If your hair is very curly, it will minimize frizz while enhancing the appearance of the natural wave/curl. If you have straight, frizzy hair, this treatment will eliminate frizz and promote radiant shine.
Thus I would say yes, it turns curly hair straight or wavy at best and their marketing strategy is to target anyone and everyone with hair regardless of what YOU want, because we should all want stick straight, smooth, frizz free hair.
Q. How long does the Brazilian Blowout last?
A. The Brazilian Blowout will last for 10-12 weeks if the A?ai After-Care Maintenance product line is used. The Brazilian Blowout is a cumulative treatment, in that the more you receive it, the healthier the hair will be and the longer the result will last the more you use it the longer it will take for your natural hair texture to return.
I apologize if I've cast an unnecessarily negative light on this process or product, I just hate advertising that makes the consumer feel one way and the results another. Everyone should be making informed decisions about how they process their hair, and I feel BBO smooths over (heh) some really key unsavory details.

My curls never came back. I can sometimes coax a slight wave into my hair with plopping and gel but my 3A/3B curls are gone except for the new growth. Depending on the quality of products used, the curls might come back, but from my experience you are just going to have to wait for your hair to grow out.

Frankly, it sounds like the stylist was pretty anxious to earn some cash on such an expensive treatment, as she should not have recommended this to someone who wanted to retain their curls. I wasn't sure if you were explicit about that with her or not. But either way, common sense says that if someone sits down with a head full of curls and is going bone straight, a word of warning/confirmation from the stylist would not go amiss!
As much as it sucks to say, I have learned over many years that a lot of the times your stylist is full of shit when it comes to selling services. Some are not, definitely, but a lot of times they are exaggerating or over-promising what a product can do.
Have you called the salon and talked to them? I know it can be awkward/embarrassing but perhaps they can at least give you guidance on what will happen from here.

My hair stylist said there were different ways to do/types of blowouts and there is no blowout that literally makes hair permanently straight. She told me the main purpose is to reduce frizz. I did my some research and thought I would be okay in the hands of my hairdresser because she knew exactly what I wanted/did not want and specializes in curls. I think I'll just avoid any kind of treatment for the rest of my life because apparently I care way more about my hair than I thought I did. Thank you for advice, I might try to use shampoo with sulfate because apprently that prevents it from lasting long (but obviously I'll do a TON of research first, lol).

Thank you for telling me about your experience! It's kind of disappointing because my hair is all the way down to my waste and it took me years to get it this long, but I really appreciate you telling me this!

Yikes. Thanks for your honesty. I just called my salon again, they said with more washes it will start going back to normal but for all I know they could be lying...

I looked at this before I got it done! The first question with the answer that says it minimizes frizz while enhancing the curl made me believe it (along with everything my hairdresser told me). I'm so mad at myself because I usually don't give in to advertising like this but I've been so fed up with my frizz lately that I just went for it. False advertising sucks.
